Best case scenario the keyboard is in bad shape. Many of the current mac laptops, the keyboard has a solid back plate and below that there is usually some sort of metal cover. So it is possible that a good cleaning or even a new keyboard would be in order. How much of that syrupy goodness got on/in the laptop is the question.
