the keychain can cause issues with airport log-in's. My brother is an
airline pilot and is logging into all kinds of wifi connections while
traveling. So he has to do this to keep this working correctly.

I gave this a try on my computer, and everything worked just fine
(at least twice in a row and counting...). When I went into my
keychains, I noticed 1 airport network password in my login keychain
and 5 or 6 in my system keychain...all for the same network. Perhaps
this was the problem. There will be a chance to test, because Mary's
laptop was also having troubles, but had only the one keychain entry
in the system keychain.
Here's to hoping that it is a result of many OS Update and Installs
+ machine migrations.
