It seems that may be the case.

The drive original to this unit is 250GB, but the drive
I'm attempting to install is 500GB, not realizing that
LaCie may have had to implement a design change
to be able to handle later disk capacity increases.
Fizzle.

The drive is not even recognized by the system, so how?
There's no prompt to ignore or initialize; nothing.

System Proviler's overview just says 'Unknown Device'
for the FireWire, as though there were no power to the
unit, but I know the old disk will at least power up and
be recognized.

I have an older LaCie enclosure that won't recognize a drive over about 128MB. Perhaps that is your issue. I'm not sure when LaCie moved to newer boards, but "back in the day" when hard drives were a LOT smaller, the boards were sufficient for them, but not for today's drives.
