Thanks, Anne, I did try, but while I get a number of former recipients
( not all, but with the same alphabetical letter), when I then click,
it just puts the clicked name into the 'send' column. I am running
10.5.8

I believe you asked about this. Dan Crutcher gave one method, but as
usual with Apple there's more than one way. I just accidently fell
on another.
When you enter a name in a new message (Apple's Mail), up pops a
list of previous recipients. If you click on the one you want to get
rid of you get a drop down menu and the first one listed in the
bottom group is Remove from previous recipient list. Also Delete
address.
Just straightened out my computer on a friend who just changed email
service.
