Thanks to John and Marta for your gracious responses to my question.
You've taken me into territory I'm not familiar with, so I'm giving it a lot
of thought. As a semi-invalid free-lance writer, I "don't get around much
anymore," so I really don't need to synchronize iCal, Address Book, or Mail
(I'm currently using google-mail). My wife owns the only iPhone in the
family. And my primary browser is Firefox, not Safari. I use my Macs
mostly for word processing and communicating with editors. Safari may be
better than Firefox, but I tend to dance with them that brought me -- i.e.,
I'm used to Firefox and don't switch apps unless there's a dire necessity.
I also note that MobileMe is $99 per year, while for the same amount,
Airport Express is forever. But thanks again for your suggestions; I'm
still mulling over the situation.

Nolan
