Nolan,

I've been using Office 2008 for Mac for about a year and it works just fine. No
virus protection needed. I had been using the 2004 version of Office for many
years and found it getting increasingly unstable with newer Mac OS versions.
I'm running Snow Leopard now and Office 2008 works well with it.

One thing to be aware of: The default file format for Word 2008 out of the box
will be ".docx", which is the new standard for Word 2007 (PC) and 2008 (Mac).
However, many people you share files with may still have older versions of Word
that won't be able to open the new format unless they've downloaded a
conversion tool. Your best bet, at least until you're sure what version the
person you're sharing with has, is to save all Word files in the older ".doc"
format, which can be opened by both the older and newer versions. You can do
this through the "Save as .... " command (and I believe you can also make that
the default filetype through one of Word's preferences). Same applies to Excel
files (.xslx is the new one, .xls is the old one) and, I presume, other Office
2008 applications.
