There may be restrictions, particularly in Carbon, that certain blocks
are contiguous, in which case it would be possible to have a large
allocation fail.

Maybe someone on the IE 5.1 for Carbon team knows for sure.

512MB, and I had almost nothing open at the time. Besides, under OSX you

should essentially never see anything like this, as VM just kicks in. 
Each app theoretically has access to 2GB of address space.
