I don't think we'll ever do this.  Prefs should just stick.  If they
don't, it's a bug and we'll work with Apple to find solutions in future
releases.  File Helper settings are a totally different issue.  The
ideal solution is for Apple to add UI for managing file helper settings
rather than having client apps do it.

A suggestion for one of the future revisions - you might want to
consider a
mechanism that lets the use know if their setting of prefs (like helper
apps) was successful or not.

Apparently, since doing so is a crapshoot depending on what apps are
currently open, it would be helpful to provide the user with feedback if
their settings changes took hold.
