Also, if this is an older house, the telephone block will be in a utility
area or the cellar where a ground connection to a cold water pipe is
available. Look for an ugly ceramic or plastic block about two or three
inches across with nuts and bolts holding tiny wires. Typically, the wires
are red, black, yellow, and green in color. If you are using one telephone
line in the house, only two wires are in use, most likely the red and green,
leaving the yellow and black available for your phonenet. When I wired in a
phone jack adjacent to my block for testing purposes, I just left the yellow
and black ones hanging in thin air. You can confirm which wires are in use
by loosening them and determining the effect on your phone service.
Also, you can notice that the RJ-11 plugs have the same color scheme for
their wires, with the red and green ones being in the center and the black
and yellow being on the outside. If you have one phone line, it uses the
red and green wires; a second line would use the black and yellow ones.
The grey box outside the house mentioned by other listers, likely already
has a test jack built-in.
