I have an Asante LC Ethernet card in my Performa 630 and initially it
would not work with my Linksys router either. It turned out that the card
will not communicate with 10/100 devices, but only 10bt. I confirmed this
because it worked connected directly to my cable modem, which was 10,
while it did not work on the router or with a crossover cable to my iMac,
both of which are 10/100.
I solved the problem by getting the cheapest 10 base t hub I could find at
Office Depot. I plugged the Performa into the hub and the hub into the
router. The newer hub could deal with 10/100 devices but for some reason
the 'ancient' card in the Performa refused to talk to anything but plain
10bt. By getting the hub, it allowed me to bridge the connection between
the Performa and the router without making the performa connect directly
to the 10/100 ports on the router.
