I too have a UMAX Astra 600S and I use a Microtech adapter.
It works fine *BUT* I have a CD-RW drive further down the SCSI chain which 
provides termination.  I have not tried the scanner alone (w/o the CD-RW) 
but I could give it a shot if you'd like and I'll let you know what 
happens.

Also note that this setup does not work in Mac OS X.
