Are you sure?  I thought Mac OS X 10.1 brings back the ability to see 
normal AppleTalk networks. At work a PowerBook G4 with 10.1.1 can see 
every AppleTalk file server on the network, all (or most) of which are 
running on OS 8.x or 9.x with normal file sharing.
