I've been running a network connected through a LinkSys router, which in turn goes through the ISP's installed modem/router.
I have found that our small network (about 20 machines) runs faster when I have assigned every machine a static ip address. Don't know why this is, but the speed differential is noticeable. That is not to say that that would be the case everywhere, but it's worth trying. I can't imagine circumstances in which it would be slower.
