Well, I have a Mac in nearly every room, connected through routers and 
switches. All I have done is to turn on "file sharing"  in the Macs that 
I want to "see" on the network. You have the choice of "Appletalk" or 
"TCP/IP" as means of connecting.

Just open the "File Sharing" control panel on the "target" Mac and set 
the preferences. Turn "Sharing" on and you are ready to go.
