Hi all - I'm still struggling to get a Linux server up & running to service both Macs & PCs. Samba is working fine for the PC side of the house but netatalk is giving me problems. I can share files but can't access an HP Laserjet attached to the Linux box.
I have created a desktop printer set to use LPR but print jobs just sit there without being printed. When the printer was created, I provided the IP address of the Linux box and the Desktop Printer Utility verified that the printer was there. I'm using a server install of RH 7.2 and the Mac is running 9.1. What I would like to find is some GOOD explanations of setting up & configuring & troubleshooting netatalk (as one can find for samba). The man pages and sample conf files are at times cryptic but more importantly don't really say how to set everything up (I'm just inferring it by "connecting the dots"). I'm not even sure how papd is supposed to provide Printer Services. Should printers just show up in the Chooser? Do I need to create an LPR spool like I have done? Will an LPR spool allow me to bypass papd/netatalk (i.e. my problem is now really LPD)? Other people's suggestions: - an OSX/netatalk link was provided last week but that doesn't talk about papd (printer services) at all. - using TCP/IP for the print spool: I don't know how to do this on the Mac Any other ideas?
