Unless your ISP allows you more than one IP address, you will need a 
router to allow more than one machine to access the internet at once. 
Routers with built-in 4 port switches run about $80 around here (PDX). 
Besides, as far as I am concerned the added hardware firewall in a 
necessary item. Checking my "port sniffng log" I see several hundred 
attempts at access each week.
