Recently I posted here about a problem with filesharing between an OSX
machine and one running system 7.1 in which OSX was able to connect to
the older machine, but not vice versa. The sys 7.1 computer would
consistently get a "the connection has been unexpectedly broken" error.
I had been focusing on the networking software on the system 7.1
side, figuring it was just a matter of finding the right version of
AppleShare or File Sharing extension, etc. As it turns out, I was
looking in the wrong place. The problem was on the OSX side all along.

What it boils down to is that the AppleFileServer subsystem in OSX must
be configured to use AppleTalk. You would think (at least I did) that
checking the box to "Make AppleTalk Active" in the Network system
preferences pane would do this. But it doesn't, or not completely.
Checking "Make AppleTalk Active" allows the OSX machine to be a client,
but not a server, of the AppleTalk protocol. Thus, it was able to
connect to the system 7.1 computer, mount shared items, and move files
both directions. But there is another parameter that must be changed
so that OSX can serve AppleTalk.

Go to your utilities folder in the Application folder and run the
NetInfo Manager. Go to /, then config, then AppleFileServer. Scroll
down through the list of properties displayed in the lower window until
you see "use_appletalk". It will be set to 0. It needs to be changed
to 1. It can be done with the NetInfo Manager, but it's not recommended
unless you really know what you are doing. (At least back up the
netinfo database first). The safe way is to download the donationware
program SharePoints from <www.hornware.com>. This program has a box to
click marked "Use AppleTalk", and it will set the parameter
"use_appletalk" to 1, as you can verify with the NetInfo Manager.
SharePoints also lets you set up Shared folders, etc. in addition to
the default OSX Public folders, manage Users & Groups and such in a
manner similar to that under the classic mac os's.

I'm still experimenting with this and trying to research the NetInfo
system and the AppleFileServer subsystem. There is almost no
documentation on all of this that I have been able to find. If anyone
is aware of any information on these subjects please share it.
I have to restart the sharing manually after a reboot, but otherwise
everything works hunky-dory, with both machines able to connect, mount,
and move data. Note that you must both "Make AppleTalk Active" in the
Network system preferences and "Use AppleTalk" in SharePoints.

For the record, the network software on the Mac IIsi was that installed
by a basic clean install of system 7.1 -->

                Extensions: Appleshare 7.1
                                                Ether Talk Phase 2 2.3.1
                                                Ether Talk Prep 1.0.2
                                                File Sharing Extension 7.1
                                                Network Extension 7.1

Control Panels: File Sharing Monitor 7.1
                                                Network 2.3.3
                                                Sharing Setup 7.1
                                                Users & Groups 7.1

If you already have your older machine set up to use TCP/IP, then you
probably won't need to do any of this. But if you have older macs that
you want to be able to connect with OSX this may help.
