Hi gang. Thanks for all the info. I already knew about
routers and MAC addresses and stuff but I'm new to
Macs (and cable model ISP issues) and needed to test a
theory by forcing the PowerMac to accept a new MAC
address.

Anyways, its fixed now. It was suggested that I cycle
the power on the cable modem and/or do a 'Release All'
on the Windows box. Neither of these seemed to work. I
was very surprised that the Release All on Windows
didn't allow the PowerMac or Linux boxes to obtain a
DHCP lease or their own. This is what lead me to
believe the ISP was storing my original computer's MAC
address, hence my original question.

So I left the cable modem unplugged all day yesterday
as a shot in the dark since I was at work all day.
Last night, I started up the cable modem, plugged in
my Linux router and everything worked fine; The Linux
box obtained an IP address from the ISP over DHCP, and
both my Win2K and PowerMac were set to their own
'internal' IP address. So, either 1) the cable modem
(a Com21 DoxPort) must be powered off for more than
just a few minutes (more than just cycling the power)
or 2) the DHCP lease expired at the ISP which cleared
the MAC address they had 'on file'.

I'm happy now, thanks for all the help. And you're
right Greg [Hoffman], you can't physically change the
MAC address burnt into the ethernet's ROM, but its
driver may be instructed to report a different MAC
address.
