I'd guess the adapters would slow down the speed, since you're going from 6
wire ethernet to 4 wire phone lines. Not all phone jacks are using the four
wires either. You can buy wall plates with combo ethernet/phone jacks as well
as wall plates that have both connectors, and then run the cable. Radio Shack
carries them. However, I think you would be much better off going with a
wireless router. They are getting quite cheap now. You can probably get one
for around 50 bucks. I like my Linksys. Of course, then you have to get
wireless setups for each computer not within wired distance.

<< Netters,
I have just signed up for DSL service through SBC. They sent
me a 2Wire Portal and said go for it. Obviously, in order to hook up a
second computer in a different room to the phone line, some sort of adapter
would be needed. They didn't tell me that or send one . . .so, after some
faunching about I figured out that the ethernet cable was just not going to
go into the phone jack. Called 'em back and they said ( after about
twenty times of saying 'just hook it up') I'd need an adapter. An HPNA
adapter. I could just go to the local store and get one. Fry's doesn't
have them and said they quit carrying them a year or two ago. MicroCenter
doesn't have them and tried to get me off on to some kind of network
through the electrical wiring of the house. (whew). I got SBC to send
just a plain modem, which is now running Computer #1 just fine. I'm
looking for an HPNA adapter to put another box online, but I'm kinda
leaning toward forgetting that and going wireless. . .if I can use a
common (not an Apple Airport Base Station) to hook up my Macs and a winbox
at the same time. I know my iMac is Airport 'ready' but I don't know
A. if there is a router (D-Link, etc.) that will work with it and
winboxes, and. . .is there any card for older PCI Mac's to get them on
wireless (Whewwhew).
