In researching my problems with Airport and Verizon DSL I came across
this from August 2000. Is it true?

Q: PPP over Ethernet and AirPort Base? Q&A

Joseph Felder writes: I have a couple of Macs and a PC networked using
Airport. I currently use a dialup PPP connection, but will be upgrading
to DSL in the next couple of days. I did a little checking yesterday
and found out 2 things:
1) my ISP (Earthlink) and also Verizon's Infospeed both use
Point-To-Point over Ethernet (aka PPoE) to connect to the internet
using DSL, and...
2) The Airport Base doesn't support PPoE.
To be honest I feel a little deceived by the claims that Apple made
stating that AirPort Hardware Basestation supports standard DSL
connections. This whole experience has been very frustrating (as well
as expensive) with no happy ending in sight.
My question is: Do you know if Apple has any plans to support PPoE on
the Hardware Basestation, and if so, when?
Answer: This has been a very popular question recently, with DSL
rollouts accelerating across the U.S. and the world. The answer is that
Apple does plan to support PPoE -- but there are issues with the
current-model AirPort base that make the developmental software update
to add PPoE support experience several problems. Apple's AirPort
software team is working to get around these, but there remains a small
chance that Apple will have to release a revised AirPort Base Station
with updated hardware to address this issue.
Either way, Apple hopes to have PPoE capability in its new AirPort
bases by year's end (to bolster sales during the Holidays). Only time
will tell whether the update will be transferrable to existing models
-- but for now, the outlook is good.
