Figure that WAPs work at around 2/3 the range given in their specs. And we (jokingly, sortof) call 802.11b a one-wall technology. 802.11a is better, but not by much. IOW, if the company has a lot of steel or wiring in their building's walls, the access point at the nearby home might not reach into, or very far into, the building. Take a look at business-grade products from companies like Cisco. Probably better to use a point-to-point hop from the home to the building, then put a small LAN (and WAP) inside.
