hello

i am new to the list and have little experience
with networking. i have a network set up with
imacs running 9 or X a g3 beige and a laserwriter
pro 630, sometimes even my newton mp2100. i guess
i am a node of a bigger newtork because i am in a
a classroom of a building w/3 seperate schools
and i have a cisco 24 port switch. all things use
the switch to access the printer and internet,
along with other printers on the network if i
choose.

so for now i have two questions
1 i always hear that if file sharing is turned on
i get a speed hit, but i want to have a file
server. any thoughts about this?

2 i have a IIci that is running 6.0.8 with a
network card. i know i am on the appletalk zone
because it tells me, and i can access the
printers, but i cannot set up the network time
control panel because the machine cannot get all
the neccesary IP stuff. how do i find this stuff
out i.e. domain name, etc.? i know it is very old
school but i like to show my students what was
available when they were young tykes.

thanks for the input

jeff
