Did you try it with a different ethernet patch cord? Are the computers
connected straight into the swtich/hub/router/whatever or are they plugged
into a walljack that goes to the device or patch panel?

I had one here where the pins inside the ethernet card jack weren't making
full contact and the slightest bump after getting it to work would
disconnect it. Again, check cards and cables.

You mean there's no longer an address present or does it fail to connect?

My money is on a bad card/dongle or cable. Most likely the card/dongle
