I have had DSL for several years now and have had no problems except
that most companies don't understand how easy it is to network a Mac. I
have verizon DSL and run it through a router to my 3 Macs. I have a
powermac 7500 running 8.6, 6500 running 9.1 and a powerbook running
10.6. If you go according to verizon my 7500 should not work but it
does (I was told it was too old). Older Macs can use DSL; I have seen
Mac2s running a web server. They told me that I needed 9.0 or better
and when I asked them why I couldn't get a straight answer. I would
suspect that what's needed is already on your mac wether you use a
router or just the DSL modem. If you use your Mac for anything
sensitive I would get a firewall to protect it.
