I tackled it. 

a) In os 7.5 and 8.1 I had to enter some server address 
from my isp which I didn't need to do in 9.1

b) Made appletalk active via ethernet

c) Finally we had ip addresses and was talking 
between machines and connected to the web. Not 
100% sure why yet.

Now if I can get my localtalk printer to show up through 
an Asantetalk device.....  May just be a power up 
sequence issue.

Hopefully by the end of next week I've got my two new 
vpn routers chatting and my localtalk printers showing 
up as an option at my home in the next town.
