So what is the best way to add a firewall if you *do* have PPPoE?

I currently have a G3/233 (OS9)hooked up to a DSL modem thru PPPoE. I want
to connect a PB 5300 (w/ Ethernet card) to the modem as well. I assume I
need a router and would like some sort of firewall.

My beef with PPPoE (besides it being a totally unnecessary protocol) are that the implementations available for the Mac are slow and tend to be unstable.

For your set-up, you have two choices:

1. Connect the DSL modem to a NAT Router that supports PPPoE, then connect the two Macs to the router.

2. Add a 2nd NIC to the G3 and run something like IPNetRouter, then connect the PowerBook to the G3 with a crossover cable (or a hub and a regular cable).

Personally, I'd go with the separate NAT Router solution. Belkin, D-Link, etc. It's a lot easier to maintain.
