I just got a big wad of small connectors that have a din8-round connector on one end and two rj-11 phonejacks on the other. Are these PhoneNet devices? Some are made by Farallon, others by PowerUser. What do they do (exactly) and how do they do it? I'm assuming they connect a Mac to a phone line, but what does that accomplish?
These are LocalTalk (= a certain type of AppleTalk) networkadapters. Has nothing to do with a phone line connection. Must have a manual somewhere around. Mail me OL if you want it.
They can be used with phone lines. PhoneNet uses the outer two wires in a four wire phone connector. The inner two can be used for a phone line. The PhoneNet adapters My house has 6 pairs of twisted pair wires running to each phone jack. I was able to wire the outer two pair for PhoneNet and the inner pair carry the voice line. I put terminating resistors at each end.
I don't use that network much anymore as I'm mostly using Ethernet but it works great.
