I have both an SMC Barricade and Belkin routers, both are "b". I got the Belkin to increase the coverage although it turned out that the better range of the Belkin made the Barricade almost redundant.

I am looking now at getting a "g" router as my new computer has an Airport Extreme card in it and I can use the speed to my server.

Unfortunately you can't much tell about the range without trying the router in your setup. If you aren't interested in doing anything fancy with the router then features won't matter much. I on the other hand run multiple servers to the outside world so flexible port mapping is important. I'd suggest downloading the PDF manual for whatever router you are interested in and review it for the features you need.

If you think you will want to use Appletalk over the wireless (likely with OS 9 machines), then you probably want to look at one of the AirPort devices.

If you are dealing with OS 9 machines then you may be able to avoid AppleTalk. OS 9 FileSharing can be done over IP and IIRC so can USB print sharing. Network browser will search for ASIP servers like Chooser.

I've been using wireless for a couple of years now with no AppleTalk and it has worked well. It did help when I got a IP networkable printer.
