Hi Pam,

I dont know if I can help with the PC issue, I've got a PC too and cant
seem to get it linked to my G4s with OSX even with Windows Sharing turned
on.
But I havent really tried too hard.

You didnt say what you need to share and if its PC to Mac or Mac to PC or
both. You may need an additional program like Dave in order to share files.

My network has 3 G4s, 2 G3 servers, 1 pc & 1 older PPC Mac. My G3s and old
mac are running OS 8.6 (explained latter) G4s have latest Panther and the pc
has windows ME. All connected with hardwire Ethernet.

You didnt say if you want to use Apple Talk or TCP/IP. But if you can,
tcp/ip is faster. For the Macs you should have tcp/ip turned on. Its a
little check box, as I remember, on the tcp/ip extensions for OS9 and part
of the System Preference under Network for OSX. With this on, you should be
able to see all the Macs on the network without appletalk. And make sure all
the hard drive you want to share have file sharing turned on (os9) and are
part of the sharing list or group, OSX under get info from Finder.

Let me know if you still have problems and Ill walk you through the
process.

The problem I encountered with networking OSX Panther with OS9 was that the
connection timed out all the time. No real set pattern, sometimes a few
minutes and sometimes a few hours. No matter what settings I used, even
never sleep, never hard disk sleep. It always lost the connection.

If anyone has a solution to this problem, Im all ears.

This timeout was never a problem with networking OS9 to OS8.6 and not a
problem networking OS8.6 to OSX.

As a matter of fact, Im using OS 8.6 in both of my G3 servers so they dont
time out when connected to my OSX macs.

The problem is I cant find a way to get the G3s using 8.6 to communicate
with only tcp/ip. So I have apple talk turned on. This is not a problem when
using OS9, but then theres the time out issue. Again, any advice from
anyone would be appreciated.

If its just a database youre sharing I can recommend FileMaker. We use it
on a server and my PC can see all the database files just fine.

Because I cant see my pc to Mac (or vs) from either platform, I put my
files I need to share on our ftp server and share it from there. Cumbersome
but free, unlike Dave. I dont really share that many files between the 2
systems.

I too would like to see all the response to this issue.

Good Luck.

Gene
