Hi John, I have set up Mac computer labs on an shoestring (with vintage equipment) for both a youth organization and a church. You can certainly set up a lab but make sure it fits the needs of the people you are working with.
7200 vintage Macs would be good for word processing, desktop publishing, e-mail and perhaps light web surfing (however you won't be able to go to some websites because the browsers you have available won't have the latest web bells and whistles.) Depending on how much memory your machines have you might be able to set up the computers with an older version of Microsoft Office for light business use or an introduction to software class. However Office is a memory hog so make sure you have enough. If you need more information on what software would be appropriate for your machines e-mail me off list. With 7200 Macintoshes you have the option of either an Ethernet or LocalTalk network (I don't know what cables you have.) Ethernet is faster but you need a hub or switch in addition to the cables.. Localtalk is slow but good enough for printing and transferring an occasional file. The main advantage of Localtalk is you don't need a hub, just the cabling and terminators. You can also network these machines to the internet with a router and a broadband ethernet account if the organization you are working with is willing to incur a monthly fee for the account. Hope this information helps you evaluate if these Macs will fit your needs. Feel free to e-mail me off list if you have questions that are not appropriate for the Mac-networking list.
