When I plug in the straight through cable, the LED on the Dayna box blinks for a second. When I plug in the crossover cable however, the LED lights up and stays on. I made the crossover cable from scratch using some RJ45s and a bit of phone wire, and I made it to standard spec (in terms of connections).
As far as I know there's no network port activity light on the iMac's ethernet port, so i've only really got the Netwrok Prefs control panel to go by.
I don't have an ethernet hub yet, since I have no other ethernet Macs and Broadband etc is unheard of out here in Spittal Country. Up until now i've been networking older Macs using localtalk leads and phone sockets. I'll see if i can borrow a hub from someone and try it with the Dayna box to see if it works.
It sounds like the crossover is the one to use.
It sounds like your EN ports are good on the Dayna box and the iMac. (link lights are good things) You probably don't need the hub for the setup you are describing. I assumed that your other older macs have ethernet ports.
On the iMac, you might try making a new location in Network Prefs and see if that doesn't give you the ethernet port you need.
Make AT active and send it out the ethernet port.
Then try to add an AT printer and see if the laserprinter shows up.
If you have trouble, powercycle the Dayna box and the printer. (turn them on and off)
