If portshare does the trick, then it might not be cheaper, but it will be easier and way more reliable to just replace the printer. HP LaserJet 4 series printers are great workhorses, cheap, and a good replacement for such an old printer. The Ethernet server cards for the HP's are cheap and plenty as well. Plus, PortShare isn't going to work with OSX, windows, or *NIX systems. That might be a deal breaker (I didn't see where you mentioned what OSes you were running).
