The biggest problems with AppleTalk these days are that many switches and

This can be a problem with wireless routers too.

In addition to Apple Airport gear, many Belkin and Asante WAPs (Wireless Access Points) support AT (AppleTalk) wirelessly and wired.

I have separate issue I'd like to ask the list about.

Am I correct in my assumption that Tiger (10.4) won't do native AT filesharing with OS9 machines?

Correct. But that shouldn't stop you. 9.1 can operate both as an ASIP (AppleShare over IP) client and server. While the client doesn't need any option enabled the server does. In the FileSharing control panel there is a check box to enable ASIP. This needs to be checked in addition to starting Personal File Sharing.

You'll also need to make sure the two machines can see each other via IP. Pinging from the X machine to the 9 machine is a good test.

I can cross-mount volumes between 9.1 and 10.3, (so it seems to be set up correctly) but when I try to fileshare between 9.1 and a machine running 10.4, I get an error message and the connection is lost.

This apparent incompatibility is keeping at least one machine on 10.3, since I can use it as an intermediary to move files between 9 and 10.4.
