If I recall there is a version of IPNetrouter that will work on a 68030 and
above. Routing is not a processor intensive task on most home networks.

The advantage of a software router is that the software has more options. A
disadvantage is that another machine must be maintained on the network.

Yes you can. The advantage of an Airport is the built-in V.90 modem. You
must add a hub or switch to add ports.

The advantages of an Asante router is that a more modern V.92 modem can be
added externally and more ports (4 or 8) are built-in.
