Anyway, I have DSL now and the modem is supposed to be also a router

this, I asked if this was in respect to the fact that it has USB and
ethernet and "yes".
Sounds like a basic NAT router.
How do you configure the "modem"? Do you go to a particular web page &
tell it your login details and so on? Can you choose the IP address
that the "inside" - your side - of the connection has?
If so, it's a router. And as such it'll do basic firewalling, yes.
No harm in using the Mac's firewalling instead, but you don't /really/
need it. I leave mine turned off behind my NAT router - a cheapo
Alcatel 510 which I was given for free.
Thanks Liam, yes you are right, I have now worked this one out. It is
made by Siemens, a Speadstream... and yes, configurable at a web
address. Actually, I have a Netgear router, looks brand new in a box,
powerbrick all plastic sealed but no CD or pamphlet. If I were to
ever come to use it, how would I access controls on a browser? Is
there some standard browser address for this sort of thing, ie. the
address of the router itself? With my Optus supplied modem/router, it
was all there at a simple http address of a few numbers (which I
assume just went to he modem/router itself?)
