Hi there

This is my first post to macnetworkprog, so I apologise if this is a FAQ or
off-topic.

I’m currently implementing an OS X app using the Multipeer Connectivity
Framework. The app forms part of a distributed audio performance by a ‘laptop
orchestra’, but the main constraint is that due to the large size of the
performance space (a cathedral, in fact), I’d ideally like my peers to be
separated by a distance of, say, 30, 50 or even 100 metres.

As Apple’s implementation of multipeer networking uses a Bluetooth LE
handshake, I am limited in distance to about 10 metres which is simply not
enough. The frustrating thing is that once the initial BLE handshake is made, I
can then walk further away and keep the connection open, because at that stage
it switches over Wifi. I would prefer it if I didn’t have to walk away (as I
then have to plug in the various audio interfaces, etc), and would rather be
able to have the handshake occur within the range of Wifi rather than the range
of Bluetooth.

My question then is: is there any way to get the handshake to occur over Wifi
instead of Bluetooth? (I assume not — but is this a hardware limitation or
software?)

Or, perhaps: does anyone know of any third-party solutions for multipeer
connectivity on OS X that occur solely over Wifi, including the initial
handshake?

Thanks in advance
Michael
