Just the beginning?

Apple''s UK unit shipments have surged 21.2 percent as its retail strategy begins to
show results in that country
A MacUser UK (free registration required) news item states that Apple UK''s strategy
to increase its market share by focusing on retail sales is showing signs of success.
A report by IDC released last week shows a 21.2 per cent year-on-year growth in the
company''s unit sales.
This indicates that Apple''s share of the UK computer market in Q1 2002 jumped to 3.2
percent from 2.5 per cent last year. Mark Rogers, Apple UK''s managing director, told
MacUser UK that the growth was partly due to the company''s expanded and enhanced
retail presence, such as the increased presence of Mac software in stores, and also to
the success of the new iMac.
An example of the former is Apple''s venture with software distributor Softline
whereby Mac-compatible applications gained prominent display in UK retailers,
including PC World and John Lewis. "It''s still early days, but the indications we''re
getting are very positive," Rogers told MacUser UK.
Kevin Doorley, managing director, Softline, said, "PC World has sold thousands of
units of software over the last eight weeks."
However, Doorley thinks the scheme''s biggest impact is still to come. "The real proof
of the pudding will come in the Christmas quarter, when consumer spending is always
highest," he is quoted in the article as saying.
Analysis: Thus far evidence of a retail/consumer surge by Apple has been anecdotal and
blunted by iMac availability problems. It will be interesting to see how Apple fairs
in the current educational and upcoming Fall buying seasons. Jaguar, DDR-equipped
PowerMac with phatter CPUs and its new-found enterprise strategy could all contributed
mightily.
