Macs lead ''lowercase'' music movement

Only on the Internet -- people who find music and enjoyment in recording and listening
to the sounds of the world around us
Wired carries the story of a new musical genre called "lowercase" recordings -- the
magnification of minute sounds. According to the story, officienados of this genre
overwhelming prefer the Mac.
If you''re still having trouble grasping the concept behind this, try this description:
"Recent compositions include a bubbling symphony of boiling tea kettles, the gentle
hiss of blank tapes being played through a stereo and the soft bumps of helium
balloons hitting the ceiling."
Using high-sensitivity microphones, composers record the sounds of the miniscule and
often overlooked elements of our lives, and amplify them with apps such as
DigiDesign''s Pro Tools. Artists then take these sounds and chop, loop, stretch,
repeat or delay them to create minimalist, near-silent musical compositions.
The Wired story includes links to a half dozen or so lowercase compositions (mp3) and
to this untrained ear its an auditory rendition of "the emperor''s new clothes." Truly
this genre is in the ear of the beholder.
"The results demand deep, concentrated listening, but can be surprisingly affecting,"
states Wired''s Leander Kahney.
