17, 19-inch iMacs coming in Q3?

This report begs more questions than it answers
Digitimes quotes industry sources as saying that Quanta Computer will begin producing
17 and 19-inch iMacs in Q3. This news comes on the heels of a report that the company
was losing LCD iMac orders to Hon Hai (known as Foxconn in the US).
This most recent story states that Apple''s consumer desktop has become a main revenue
driver for Quanta, which shipped 235,000 units in Q1. Analysts predict Q2 shipments
could grow to 350,000 units.
Around the clock
Digitimes quotes unnamed sources as saying iMac production runs three shifts a day.
Quanta claims were it not for the shortage of key components they could supply 200,000
units a month.
Sources say Quanta is the only company assembling LCD iMacs for Apple despite
pressures from would-be iMac makers quoting prices up to 30 percent less. For its
part, Hon Hai Precision supplies the consumer desktop''s cables and assembles part of
its steel arm. Catcher Technology supplies the iMac''s zinc-alloy base.
Spin control
It appears recent reports that Hon Hai had acquired Quanta''s LCD iMac orders appear
to be unfounded. That the company is firing back shouldn''t come as a surprise. That
Quanta or sources close to Quanta have spilled the beans on Apple''s new product plans
for the Fall is very surprising. ATI was essentially dumped in part for such an
offense.
Nevertheless this report asks more questions than it answers -- 17 and 19-inch iMacs?
Could this be an extension of the eMac product line? LCD iMacs with 17-inch screens
have been speculated, but 19-inch LCD models don''t seem likely at all. Does anyone
make 19-inch LCDs? To my knowledge, no.
A short-tube CRT 19-inch eMac on the other hand is a more likely possibility. Perhaps
there will be 17-inch LCD iMacs at the high-end, and 17 and 19-inch eMacs filling out
the education and consumer low-end?
Given that the sources quoted are unnamed and the somewhat unusual import of the news
"they" bring, aside from confirmation of Quanta''s continued iMac production role,
this news should be taken with a grain of salt.
