Sonnet cuts prices, intros X bundle for legacy Macs
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
June 2nd 2002
Get your Jurassic PowerMac in shape with a G3 or X-upgrade bundle
Sonnet Technologies has lowered its prices by as much as US$100 on many of its most
popular products, including CPU upgrades for first and second generation, as well as
beige and B&W models.
Reduced pricing is available on the:
Crescendo/NuBus G3 500/1M US$249.95 (was US$299.95)
Crescendo/7200 G3 400/512 US$169.95 (was US$199.95)
Crescendo/7200 G3 400/1M US$199.95 (was US$249.95)
Crescendo/WS G3 500/1M US$299.95 (was US$399.95)
Encore/ZIF G3 500/1M US$199.95 (was US$249.95)
Sonnet''s has also lowered the price of its 128MB Piccolo USB Flash Drive to US$149.95
(was US$169.95).
X update for PCI Macs
Sonnet has created a special product bundle consisting of G4 450 CPU upgrade card,
Sonnet PCI OS X Installer CD and a 128MB DIMM. This OS X solution for PCI Power Macs
is available at a special estimated street price of US$349.95, which represents a
US$60 savings from these items'' regular retail prices. The bundle will ship between
June 1 and July 15, 2002, and is available to all Sonnet customers outside Japan. This
product can be purchased from any Sonnet reseller or from the Sonnet online store (OS
X must be purchased separately).
With this bundle, Sonnet provides PCI Mac (7-9600, compatible clones and workgroup
servers) users the opportunity to upgrade their machine with a fast G4 processor and
enough memory to enjoy the benefits of OS X and the many new OS X applications. Of
course, OS 9 users will also see performance gains. The G4/450 Crescendo''s 1MB
backside cache running at 225MHz provides additional punch, further accelerating
performance in many tasks. Users upgrading from "stock" PCI systems can expect gains
of up to 10 times over that of the original system, according to the company.
Sonnet offers owners of Crescendo/PCI G3 and G4 cards the option of downloading a
Sonnet installer to run Mac OS X on the PCI models mentioned above (Sonnet''s OS X
Installer is not compatible with PowerCenter, PowerCenter Pro, PowerCurve,
PowerTower). Mac OS X''s compatibility in these machines will match that in Power
Macintosh G3 computers. This breakthrough solution is accessible from Sonnet''s
website and can be purchased separately for US$29.95, but is included with this
special bundle.
Analysis: Although Apple recommends an AGP-equipped Mac running a G4 processor, many
users have successfully installed and run X on their legacy Macs. There is, of course,
a performance penalty, but it will run.
XLR8 Your Mac offers a wealth of information on hardware upgrades and performance
issues.
One of my next projects is "upgrading" the wife''s beige desktop G3 to run X -- I''ll
let ya''ll know how it turns out.
