MCE Puts CD Burners Into Early iMacs
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
June 18th 2002

Fast burner salvation for owners of original tray-load iMacs.

MCE has released a $199 CDRW upgrade for earlier, tray-load iMacs. These include the
original Bondi Blue 233MHz model, up to the fruity 333MHz iMacs.

Delivering 16x CDR burning speeds, MCE says the internal CDRW gives iMacs a much
better option than the slow, unreliable CDR burning offered by USB burners, which are
usually limited to a mere 4x speed. Moreover, additional power cables and desktop
hogging by external CDRWs becomes a thing of the past.

The MCE iCDRW16 drive works with Toast, as well as Apple''s Disc Burner and iTunes.
It''s also bootable and has a customizable eject button to match the color of the iMac
it''s used with. Toast Lite is not bundled, but is available as an option.

The drive itself features buffer underrun protection and is bootable under OS 9 and OS
X. Users may install the drive themselves, although MCE recommends a deal
installation. The CDRW also reads at 24x and rewrites at 10x.

The iCDRW 16 ships June 21. More information on ordering is available at MCE.

Analysis: If Sonnet''s Harmoni CPU/FireWire upgrade isn''t for you, this is a great
way to get past the horrors that is USB 1.1 burning.
