XPlay: Released at last

Besides sharing mp3s between platforms, this software makes it easy to swap any type
of file
Mediafour has announced the availability of XPlay, which brings the power of Apple''s
uber mp3 player to Windoze users. Just plug an iPod into a PC and XPlay makes it easy
to load mp3 music and other files. XPlay can automatically hot synchronize an iPod
with an mp3 collection when it''s attached to a PC.
"Thanks to built-in MacDrive technology, XPlay even makes your iPod appear as a normal
hard drive, so its a great way to take your data files and documents with you anywhere
-- even a Macintosh!," quips Mediafour''s website.
This software offers drag-n-drop simplicity and allows an iPod to be managed like any
other hard disk under Windoze. In fact, users can add vCard contacts from Outlook to
the Contacts folder on the iPod just as they would on a Mac.
System requirements are modest -- Windoze 98SE or newer and a CD drive -- and the iPod
must be running v1.1 of its software (you need a Mac to update to iPod software,
yes?). This software is available for US$29 directly from Mediafour.
Analysis: The idea underpinning this software -- that the iPod is hands down the best
mp3 player and that Windoze users will want one too -- is still valid. It''s just a
bit tardy in getting to market.
