Dvorak the Hack Does It Again.
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
June 25th 2002

This time it''s the ''Real People'' ad campaign.

Presumably encouraged by the number of hits he got from his recent "Shoot the Mac"
column, John Dvorak has now set his sights upon Apple''s ''Real People'' advertising
campaign.

Naturally, Dvorak doth protesteth too much by opening his article much like the last
one: "I seriously did not want to write about the Mac again".

Dvorak continues in much the same vein: "This campaign really stinks. Perhaps Steve
Jobs is finally sick of running Apple, and is now trying to subvert his position at
the company."

It suggests Dvorak has learned very little about Jobs in all his years of watching
him. If Jobs were tired of Apple, I think he would have made tracks by now. Running a
company - particularly a respected, cutting-edge technology company - like a personal
fiefdom is essentially inherent in Jobs'' nature.

Our favorite PC company Dell doesn''t get off lightly though. Dvorak comments on
Dell''s ad campaign "I personally find it nauseating," but notes it appears to be
working. But he saves his sharpest barbs for Apple. To wit, "Trashing an entire
platform in a personal way and insulting Windows users is not going to work. It''s a
negative message. It shows how petty Apple has become."

Trashing an entire platform [Macintosh] is what Dvorak has done not only for the last
decade or so, but as recently as last week. Insulting Mac users is also part of his
repertoire.

Dvorak then moves on to criticize the ads themselves. He concludes that if the people
in the ads are representative, "I fear for the future of Apple. Seriously."

Seriously, John, why pretend that you care? You thought all of the people in the ads
should get a PC? You also descend to the level of personal comments on the personal
appearance of those in the ads. Should we refer to you as "the overweight John
Dvorak". Seriously.

I don''t think we should give anymore oxygen to this kind of thing. Right now, we feel
like John Cleese carrying a large garden gnome saying, "Just going to visit John
Dvorak, honey"
