Fired: Apple Australia Roasts Sacrificial Lamb to Appease Gartner

Gartner fails to endorse report officially - yet.
Corporate PR manager of Apple Australia, Myna Van Pelt, has been handed her marching
orders in the wake of the company''s premature release of a Gartner study.
As reported previously on IGM, Gartner had completed a major study of the usage and
total cost of ownership around 10,000 PCs and Macs at Melbourne University. The
conclusion was that Macs were up to 36% less espensive to maintain than PC-based
networks.
Van Pelt went public with the report around 17 June, when it was reported by ZDNet
Australia. However, as The Register has noted, Gartner had not approved the report,
and Apple Australia removed Van Pelt in order to keep Gartner happy. The Register
suggests her removal was unfair, given that Gartner had handed Apple the report.
IGM''s take is that the report, regardless of whether it was cleared or not, cannot be
simply repudiated by Gartner. If the study showed that Macs exhibited lower TCO than
PCs (within the published methodological parameters of the survey), we see no reason
why it should not be released.
However, the down side is that reports like this, while widely reported by the Mac/PC
media, are likely to be widely ignored or papered over by the army of MCSEs who
dominate IS and largely control their acquisitions. These are good figures for Mac
users and admins to crow about, but what do you think their impact will be in the real
world? Moreover, we doubt whether it will convince Mr/Ms. Consumer that their $1,199
Mac is, ultimately, cheaper than the $599 white box PC they saw at a store down the
street.
Analysis: I can think of what another famous Van Pelt might have said about this:
"Good Grief!"
