ATI to launch two RV250-based chips
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

July 17 will feature more than just Apple fireworks

Digitimes, Asia''s finest purveyor of digital dish, has revealed that ATI will
announced two new chips based on it RV250 core -- the Radeon 9000 Pro and Radeon 9700
-- on Wednesday July 17.

(As the faithful know, Wednesday is also the day Steven P. will take the stage in New
York for his keynote address)

Unlike nVidia, which is having difficulties in moving NV18 and NV30 production to the
more efficient 0.13-micron process, ATI is migrating the manufacture of its new,
high-end silicon in stages so it can bring the 9000 and 9700 faster. DigiTimes says
that a combination of 0.15 and 0.13-micron processes are being used to get product to
market as quickly as possible.

Reportedly, nVidia''s production difficulties have caused the roll out of
next-generation NV18 and NV30 products until the end of Q3.

Digitimes reports that although ATI''s 9000 and 9700 offer only slightly better
performance than current models, it could steal a march on nVidia in the all-important
third and fourth quarters. The No. 2 graphics chip vendor''s 7500 is already very
competitive in the mid-range market segment and the company is aiming to unseat nVidia
as it struggles with manufacturing problems.

Analysis: With much of the IT press in one place, or with eyes focussed thereupon from
afar, ATI is looking to slip in under the reality distortion field and steal a bit of
Apple''s thunder. Wasn''t it last year at MWNY that ATI "got the boot" from Apple''s
pro desktop line. Is there irony brewing here?
