Hacking the iBook''s Dual Monitor Capabilities

The story of one man''s fluke - oh, all right, ingenuity.
In case you missed it, Jason O''Grady''s PowerPage has been following the Mystery of
the Monitor Spanning iBook.
Hackmeister and Powerpage correspondent Klaus Rutem�ller has published a page
detailing how to get your recent iBook (700Mhz) to support expanded desktop mode.
Many iBook owners will know of the frustration of not being able to do more than
1024x768 resolution on an external display, even though the ATI card all iBooks are
equipped with supports higher resolutions.
Klaus has found that the block on the iBook card is in software only, not hardware and
has published not just one, but two ways of doing it. No soldering or cracking open
your iBook required. Just a bit of software swapping.
A few days'' ago when Klaus posted this, a lot of people seemed to think it was a fake
- not so. Klaus welcomes email from iBookers with large external monitors to test
resolutions. Also, if you have the previous (600MHz, 500MHz) model, let him know if
the hack works. Hell, let us know too.
