Schiller Talks Office X, Jaguar Pricing
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
July 24th 2002
MacWorld redux for the business publications.
Apple''s Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, talks Jaguar and more in an
interview at Businessweek.
Schiller discusses iPod for Windows, saying that "maybe some of those Windows users,
the next time they buy a computer, will at least consider an Apple product."
On the ''Switch'' campaign, Schiller says Apple has received "thousands" of letters
from Windows switchers which say "you finally convinced us." Schiller also argues the
naysayers about the Switch campaign have no hard data upon which to base their
negative conclusions, whereas Apple has much evidence suggesting Switch''s positive
impact. Schiller also noted that Apple''s Retail Stores supplied anecdotal evidence
suggesting Windows users were visiting the stores because of the campaign.
On the $129 charge for Jaguar (10.2), Schiller argues that Apple made 10.1 free, even
though normally such a major upgrade would have cost $129. "A year and a half" without
charging for upgrade, said Schiller, echoing Jobs'' keynote, is a pretty reasonable
amount of time.
Businessweek also asks Schiller whether Apple''s iApps are undermining innovative Mac
developers, with the incorporation of a revamped Sherlock into Jaguar, and other apps,
such as iCal and Mail. Among the third-party developers mentioned are Karelia''s
Watson and Bare Bones'' Mailsmith.
Schiller replies that Apple has always done a lot of its own apps, from the days of
the Apple // to the Mac''s MacPaint and MacDraw.
The hottest topic Schiller addresses is the recent Microsoft-Apple spat over Office
v.X sales and Apple''s marketing of OS X. Schiller simply restates the objectives: 20%
OS X in installed base by the end of the year.
Finally, on Office v.X''s pricing, Schiller says that $500 is too much, when buyers
have already dropped $1,000 or $1,500 on a new computer - they don''t want to spend
another $500, he says.
