Microsoft Prepping Three Editions of Office X

Are multiple versions of office:mac coming?
ThinkSecret''s Nick de Plume is reporting that the recent dust-up between the MacBU''s
Kevin Brown and Apple VP Phil Schiller has pushed the Microsoft marketing machine into
hyperdrive - with possible ''Professional'', ''Standard'' and ''Home'' editions of
office:mac to come.
In an attempt to push Office v.X, ThinkSecret says MS is giving serious consideration
to reducing not only the price of Office, but also a cross-grade from AppleWorks, and
a budget-priced edition for purchasers of new Macs.
The story says that Microsoft''s Mac market survey data denotes three typical
purchasing demographics: broadly, these are the consumer, SOHO and business user.
The Home edition would get Word, Excel and Entourage, with suggested price points
ranging from $199 to $349.
A ''better'' edition, would be standard. It''s what you buy now - all four apps,
including Powerpoint - but would be priced between $299-$499, with possible upgrade
pricing of between $149-$299.
The high-end ''Professional'' edition would be similar to the ''Standard'' edition,
but would also include MS''s Exchange Server and Remote Desktop Client, for hooking up
with Windows machines. Pricing under consideration is apparently $449-$599.
Those surveyed gave a range of prices they would be prepared to pay for individual
applications, but Entourage came out lowest.
It is also possible that might consider cross-grades or limited-time $149 Office
prices for buyers of new Macs.
Analysis: [coughs modestly] Ahem. That''s what I suggested here last week. We thought
MS should have continued their Word + Entourage package (with upgrades available] for
X.
Okay, so let''s run a survey right now. Then MS can buy it off us. How much will you
pay for Office X? What''s a reasonable price for an AppleWorks crossgrade? How much
for just Word or just Excel or Entourage? How about these three editions? What should
be the price gap between them? Your Mac. Your money. Your choice.
