A new technology, hyper-sonic sound, may bring sound to your inner-most sanctum
MSNBC has the story of Woody Harris, an inventor and inverterate self-promoter, and
his latest creation -- the hyper-sonic sound system (HSS). When the concept is
productized it may allow you to listen to heavy metal, a Bach contata or favorite jazz
opus on the plane, or anywhere for that matter, with the volume set to "10" (some
prefer "11") without disturbing a person sitting right next to you.
"[H]olding a gizmo that looks something like a retro-futuristic waffle iron with a
portable CD player Velcroed to its back, Harris asks, ''Are you ready?'' [T]hen points
his invention directly at the head of someone who�s just entered the room 10 feet
away. ''Now, can you hear it? Can you hear it? Isn�t that unbelievable?''" the
acticle''s authors, Jamie Reno and N''gai Croa, report.
The person across the room hears -- all of a sudden -- the sound of a waterfall (or
whatever sound or music is loaded in the device''s CD player) inside his head. This an
incredible realization and sensation for an initiate, according to the report.
Further, the authors verify that no one else in the room can hear the sound. It�s as
if the sound is coming out of thin air.
Harris told MSN he has already sunk an estimated $30 million into the research and
development of the concept. Limited production devices are in production and will cost
from $600 to $900 depending on the size of the unit desired.
