Amazon and MacResQ offer lower-cost alternatives to paying the price that Apple is
demanding for Jaguar
Amazon and MacResQ, respectively, are offering ways to reduce the cost of purchasing
Apple''s upcoming uber-update, Jaguar, a.k.a. X.2.
For its part, Amazon is offering $50 off the retail price of Jaguar via a mail-in
rebate. Buyers must place their order between July 29 and Sept 3. With the rebate,
your final price will be $79.
This information comes by way of XLR8 Your Mac. However, the story on that site is
premised with "I almost hesitate to post a note on Amazon rebates after the disputes
in the past on a Photoshop rebate..." so may want double-check on this offer with
Amazon beforehand.
X.1, ThinkFree Office bundle
MacResQ, perhaps best known for its two-day PowerBook repair service, is offering a
X.1/ThinkFree Office bundle for $99. Although your final price is only $10 less than
Apple''s full-upgrade price, you do get the aforementioned non-M$ productivity suite
in the deal.
ThinkFree Office is an affordable productivity suite -- word processing, spreadsheet
and presentation graphics apps -- that''s powerful and easy-to-use. ThinkFree can
seamlessly open, edit and save directly to the corresponding Microsoft Office file
formats like .doc, .xls and .ppt. ThinkFree Write, Calc and Show allow users to
effortlessly exchange files with friends and co-workers using Microsoft Word, Excel
and Powerpoint. Its unique, pure Java architecture enables it to run on Windows or
Macintosh operating systems. ThinkFree Office features integrated, Internet-based file
sharing and storage with end-to-end security.
A hard copy of ThinkFree Office sells for $49.95 direct. I''ve acclimating myself to
using ThinkFree instead of M$ Office ($499) and can say from experience that it
provides about 95 percent of functionality of the latter without the bloat or moral
ambiguity.
Analysis: Both of these deals have merits -- Amazon is cheaper; MacResQ includes
ThinkFree. I think, however, that an astute observer may be able to find equal or
better deals by perusing Deal Mac or Deals on the Web.
